Obsession: Mila Kunis' Elie Saab Dress

Ever since the Academy Awards last week, I can't seem to stop thinking about that incredible lavender number Mila Kunis rocked down the red carpet. I think it could very well be the perfect dress. My crush for this dress has only grown the past week and I think if I don't write about it, I'll burst. It's sexy, a little scandalous, and oh so feminine. If I could wear this dress every day and not get fired for lewd conduct, I would in a heartbeat. But alas, not everyone has the body of Mila Kunis (who I also have a mild girl-crush on now). So without further ado, here it is.

Birthday Candles and Confetti

My birthday is in about a week and with another year comes a yearning for more glamor in my life. I've become comfortable, not in a confidence sense but in a lack of effort sense. I've always been a sucker for glitz and glam, but those sweat pants and slippers have been looking mighty good these days. With this year I want to get back into the girly side of me. I want to give myself a slight makeover - experiment with different makeup, dye my hair darker, things like that. And, of course, there's the clothes. Every girl should have a pair of sparkly shoes in her closet to brighten the days when nothing seems to fit and her hair just won't stay put. Take a look at these pumps and flats. Equinox Fitness goes ViPR

A week or two ago, I was asked to attend a press event for a new fitness innovation popping up in Equinox gyms. It's basically a new tool and exercise concept that's focused on strengthening your core and working with long strokes of movement, rather than targeting individual muscles. This is the kind of workout you get when doing actual physical activity in the real world, not in a gym with a specific number of reps and a personal trainer named Rick. Check out this video that gives some info on what ViPR does for the body:

The founder, Michol Dalcourt, was at the event today. He created the rubber tube you see in the video that is anything but just a tube. There are endless workouts you can do with it and Equinox has it exclusively. When first looking at it, it looks like a cross from a PVC pipe and a tire with handles, but quickly learned it's much more useful. They have varying weights (mine was 8 pounds, the lightest) and sizes. With that, I can workout right along side a pro football player, be able to do the same things, and get the same workout, just on different levels.

But OK, enough with the sales pitch. Here's my experience. I was nervous. Partially because everyone else invited were seasoned fitness editors who probably run ten miles a day and have forgotten what a bagel tastes like. Partially because I haven't been in a gym in years and showering in public locker rooms is right up there with snake bites and burglaries. But mostly, because I'm one of the most unfit, unstrong (pretend it's a word), and inflexible people you will ever meet. No, I'm not being modest. In sixth grade I got the award in PE class for "Most Sportsmanlike" meaning "Best Loser." In seventh grade my dad wanted me to quit basketball because he thought the embarrassment and ridicule was even worse for me than my incapability to do a free throw. And now, even the thought of running a mile in Golden Gate Park makes me exhausted. So doing a new workout in a room with photographers and fitness gurus freaked me out. But keep reading, it gets better.

The exercise wasn't very hard. In fact, I could do it without any embarrassment whatsoever! A great thing about this new innovation is that it can be as difficult as you want it to be. I'll let you know if I'm sore tomorrow (I'm thinking that is pretty guaranteed). We had a small taste of what the real full throttle experience is like, so I'm sure that doing a full workout with the rubber tube would kick even my bootie into shape.

After the presentation, I had a wonderful smoothie and headed off to the locker rooms where I expected to find what locker rooms normally look like. I guess I've never experienced an Equinox locker room before. It was the Chanel of locker rooms.

I left with a feeling of being tired yet energized, with designer hair product in my locks and still in awe that they have free razors and private showers.

Etsy Find: Pretty Birdie

Some of my favorite posts are the Etsy finds, and this one is no exception. I found Pretty Birdie's shop right away and loved it all. I chose six pieces that I thought were a comprehensive set to show their style. And it's not just cute clothes, they make the pieces from organic and sustainable fabrics with a splash of antique accents here and there. I love it all and I would totally wear all of the pieces with pride.

The owner, Stephanie Teaque, is sure making some great pieces and I can't wait to see what she creates in the future.

Scales, Fangs, and Venom... Yes Please!

They say you should face your fears, whether it's heights, commitment, or broccoli. Since I can't really emulate big bodies of water with accessories (besides the obvious blue tones), let's go with my second biggest fear... snakes. I think it started in that scene from Indiana Jones and escalated. Below are a few snake-inspired pieces of jewelry, but a variety of providers (I'm talking Iosselliani to Target). Now all I have to do is conquer the water thing, but I'll save that for another day when I can think of a good excuse not to.

I love Ankasa's latest jewelry, especially this slithering and scale-full necklace that will easily become the center of attention. Look through the other jewelry pieces on the website when you get a chance too; don't worry, this is the only one that bites.

Fashion is a Wonderland

I saw "Alice in Wonderland" on Sunday and I noticed the costumes more than anything else. OK, maybe not more than Johnny Depp, but come on! The outfits are amazing and so creative. I recommend the movie for many reasons, most of which being the ensembles. Surprisingly, Alice's outfits are actually quite wearable in the real world. In fact, the story and the concept of a Wonderland has inspired a new line by Sue Wong... but I'm getting ahead of myself. Here are some clips from the movie.

The costumes were done my Colleen Atwood. Yes, the same Colleen Atwood that did "Sweeney Todd" and "Chicago". The costumes for "Alice in Wonderland" match the feel of the movie to a tea... a mad-hatting tea party to be precise.

In a magazine over the weekend I came across a "Sue Wong for Walt Disney" ad. Having not seen the movie, I figured that it was just like what I would find in the movie. Au contraire! Sue Wong must have gotten her inspiration from the book and other movies because her line and the costumes are very different. The Sue Wong dresses are sweet, extremely feminine, and understated. Maybe it's the after Valentine's Day blues or maybe just the cloudy weather, but I feel like looking at vintage jewelry. There's just something about it. You know it has a story, but it won't tell you what. Maybe an old ring you find in an antique store was actually Queen Elizabeth's or maybe the necklace you find at a garage sale was worn by Joan of Arc. OK, that's not likely, but you get what I mean. Etsy is a guilty pleasure of mine whenever I have time to kill and inspiration to find. When it comes to fashion, I usually stick to jewelry and scarves, but this time I was looking for something warm and cozy (I guess this San Francisco weather is getting to me). I looked at jackets and what I found was pleasing, especially AlexandraAnderson. I love her convertible jackets. Imagine Transformers in fashion form. You can make subtle changes like the scarf swooping to the right or the left or big changes like changing the entire way the fabric hangs. Website Find: Charm and Chain

It's always fun to find up-and-coming designers that you like even more than the established ones. A while ago, InStyle magazine featured a small section of a spread to Charm And Chain. I over looked it at first, but quickly went back to that page. I checked out the website and fell in love. It's a collection of jewelry designers, both established and new to the scene, who sell their creations together on this site. They are all different, from classic and simple pieces to fun and wild concoctions. It is definitely a site worth checking out and gaining inspiration for all types of fashion, not just jewelry. A Clutching Experience

I've been avoiding Victoria Beckham's fashion line for a while now. I'm not sure why... maybe because I refused to acknowledge that she was really a celebrity anymore, maybe because I was jealous because she has David and I have... nevermind, or maybe she has simply stayed under my radar. That is, until now. Let's face it, she truly is back. Not because of her husband or long-lasting fame from her Posh Spice days. She has become someone different all together and she really is fabulous. Did anyone see the America Idol that she guest hosted (or am I showing too much of my nerdy side)? It's finals week here (my last ever!) and everyone seems to be breaking out their most comfortable and fuzzy belongings. I have been putting my white fluffy scarf and beanie with pom poms to good use as well. I came across an ad in Elle for Velvet by Graham and Spencer this morning and remembered why I love them so. The fabrics are like heaven. They are so warm and soft, yet flexible and not restrictive. Here are a few I adore from their fall and holiday collections. I can just imagine snuggling up by the fire and sipping hot coco in the sweaters!

Sea Glass Dreaming

'Tis the Season to be Plaid

The weather's getting cooler, the boots are getting fluffier, and the plaid is coming out in truck loads. Gap, my official go-to place for plaid that's rad, has ads everywhere for their new collection. Whether you're going through magazines or watching TV, you are bound to see their logo - which, by the way, is currently plaid too! I've always been skeptical of wearing plaid, mostly because I don't want to look like a lumberjack or a Catholic school girl. But worn correctly, I like it. It's cozy, not just in texture but in look. The key is just to wear it sparingly and don't try to pair other patterns with it.

Vote Winner: Let Them Be Cheap!!!

The poll has closed and the votes are in. To refresh your memory, the poll was about if you approve of expensive designers making less expensive lines to roll with the times. The debate is centered around if it takes away from the specialness and exclusivity of the brand or not. The winner for this vote was that it was great for designers to do this. I guess people aren't too worried about the expensive image after all. In second place, interestingly enough, came that it was totally wrong and took away from what the designer stood for - high quality clothes and a status that goes with it. So I have done some research and found that one of my favorite designers, Vera Wang, did just this. She has a line at Kohls called Simply Vera by Vera Wang.

I have to say I don't love all of it. It's definitely a line you have to sift through and it looks like it may be directed towards slightly older women than myself. Nonetheless, it's Vera!

Rad Ad- Juicy Couture

Making a fashion ad that's original and fresh isn't an easy task with the multitude of ads you find in fashion magazines. Here is one that especially stood out to me. Some of my biggest inspirations for fashion come from print ads found in magazines like Elle and Vogue. This one was in InStyle. I love Juicy Couture, but even if I had never heard of this brand, this ad would have drawn me in. I love how creative and different it is. It's fun and funky and I can honestly say I have never seen disco balls in a pool or a man on stilts working to sell clothes. I like it as an ad and a work of art.

The copy reads, "Do the Dont's. Make a Mess." That's what fashion is about lately, after all. The breaking of rules can create new fashion norms. I thoroughly approve of this statement.

I Heart Lulu Frost!

Oh my gosh! I don't think I have ever come across a designer and been so overwhelmed. I saw one of Lulu Frost's necklaces in InStyle, which I adored, and decided to look her up. And what did I find? She's amazing! Not only is she 26 and already a fashion genius, but her work is so extremely beautiful, made of antiques that she finds. Because of this, each piece is one of a kind. Here is an excerpt from the biography on her website that describes all the fascinating items she uses:

"26-year old Dartmouth College graduate Lisa Salzer, a.k.a Lulu, creates each one-of-a-kind piece from found period antiques, including long-lost room numbers from the legendary Plaza Hotel, cut steel shoe buckles from the 1860's, forgotten keys, beautifully crafted locks and eschutcheons, chandelier crystal, watch fobs, rare Victorian charms and other resurrected finds."

Talk about a piece of jewelry that tells a story! I really recommend going to her site and seeing all of the other great pieces she features. These are just a sampling.

They are making cheaper lines and selling them in places like Target and Wal Mart. In our new world of limited economic surplus, do you think this switch many designers are making is good? Etsy Find: Critter Jitters

Sometimes in the morning you just don't want to whip out that tight sundress or those stiff, complicated blouses. I had one of those days today. It didn't matter what I pulled out, I just didn't want to wear it. I'm not talking about things that weren't cute. I just didn't feel like putting them on my body. That sounds weird, but some days are made for tee shirts. Sometimes, there is nothing better than a comfy, reliable, worn in tee. When you're happy, you feel confident. Tory Burch's "Burch in Thailand" Collection

This month's Elle featured Tory Burch's new jewelry line that varies greatly from her well known ballet flats and simple jewelry. This work is cultural and exotic, exuding in feminine beauty.

These necklaces stood out to me, mostly because they feature soft ethereal feathers with hard and edgy shapes. You definitely have to be confident to pull these off in real life, but I really appreciate the look and, on a good day, maybe I could wear one well. I also really like that they tie in the back (neckLACE, get it?). With the perfect amount of sparkle and sophistication, these pieces are stunning.

While flipping through this month's InStyle, I found one of the most adorable, yet simple and sophisticated, skirts I have seen. It was by Aaron Ashe who, shockingly, I had never heard of. I was shocked because his work is totally my style in every way. He combines ruffles and cool saturated colors to make wearable, yet highly trendy, fashion. While I didn't find that particular skirt, I fell in love with a dozen other pieces. Here are a few. Tell me what you think. Glamorous? I think so!

Window Shopping - Harem Pants

Welcome to a new series I am starting - Window Shopping. You know when you see something in stores and it fascinates you, yet you don't feel like it is for you, or anyone for that matter? It's interesting to look at and think about, but it doesn't seem to be something that can be a reality in your life. I often go window shopping, looking through stores with no intent to buy. Although I am sometimes unsuccessful in that second part, I like to look at trends that I wouldn't consider if I were shopping for keeps.

Harem pants are that guilty pleasure for me. Well, maybe not pleasure. I can't say I have seen them on anyone and liked the way they looked. They actually seem like one of those pieces that can unflatter even the most awesome of bodies. But anyway, harem pants are very interesting and can be seen in all of the big stores and on many of the most popular runways. It seems that either you love them or you loath them.

Can anyone prove me wrong? I would be happy to see a pair that works.

Do you remember Jeffrey Sebelia? He was the winner of "Project Runway" a few seasons back. Jeffrey was the one who was sort of punk-rockish and always made really creative garments. He was my favorite through the whole season and I was so excited when he won. Last night, he somehow popped into my mind and I wondered what he was doing now. Dancing with the Stars

So I don't normally watch "Dancing with the Stars", but I caught a few minutes the other night and I was drawn to their outfits. They actually reminded me of ice skating outfits. They have a lot of bling and eye-catching qualities. These dancers also show quite a bit of skin, which I wouldn't have expected. The guys look pretty done up as well.

Oh Dolly

When I think of Dolly Parton, a lot comes to mind. He songs, her movies, her.. umm.. ehh... physical assets. But most of all I think of her clothes, often bizaar and extravagant, but always daring. I'm not saying that I particularily like her outfits or that I would wear them, because I certainly would not, but there is something to be said for a celebrity who will wear whatever she likes and wants to express her personality through her clothes. I picked some of my favorites (well ok, a few more than some).

This is probably the one outfit I might actually wear. I like the boots especially.

My new favorite thing to wear these days is a pair of boots by Madeline. They are called Beatrice in Brown. I got them for FREE from my internship (best job ever). At first I wasn't sure about them. They seemed a little loud for me. And I normally don't like bulky shoes; I think I learned that rule from an old episode of "What Not to Wear." But I really love them! No offense to Stacy and Clinton. They fit really well and are really comfortable, not to mention that they make me feel confident.

First Lady of Fashion

I feel it's only appropriate with the spring Vogue just out to mention Michelle Obama. As many of you know, she adorns the cover this month in a stylish fascia dress. She has been quoted by the LA Times as turning the page of American fashion. She's the second first lady to appear on the cover of the Washington Post. Her clothing taste has attracted photographers and designers alike. Although I find it disappointing that I here more about her clothes than I do about her thoughts and political views, I do have to say that she truely isn't afraid to wear clothes that pop. Here are some of my favorites, although I had to narrow down a lot.
